Example 1 of event extraction. The figure depicts the three types of structures from the input text: Dependency structure, explicit events, and implicit events. An arrow between the syntactic and semantic structures indicates a correspondence link between two structures for a phrase. The explicit event is combinatorially composed from phrasal structures to sentential structures by using the patterns in Table 3. The implicit event is deduced from the explicit events by using the inference rules 1 to 3 in Table 4.
